Name Picker — No Signup Required

A random name picker for teachers with zero account creation, zero email gate, zero upload. Your class list stays in this browser only.

0 names

Saved to this browser. No account, no upload, no signup.

Useful for cold-calling — each student is picked at most once until you re-paste the list.

Three things we don't ask for

  • No email. No newsletter signup, no "enter your email to continue" gate, no email-required password reset because there's no password.
  • No account. No Google Classroom sync, no Apple ID, no Microsoft 365 sign-in. The tool runs anonymously.
  • No upload. The class list you paste is saved in your browser's local storage on this device. It is never sent to our server, never synced to a cloud, never visible to us.

What that means for privacy reviews

District technology directors evaluating new classroom tools usually run them through a privacy review: what data is collected, who processes it, where is it stored, who has access. For this tool, the answers are short — no student data is collected, processed, stored, or accessible by anyone but the teacher on the teacher's own device. There is no third-party data processor to evaluate, no PII transfer to document, no breach surface beyond the teacher's laptop.

This pattern usually passes a privacy review on first pass. We can't sign a vendor data-processing addendum because we don't process the data — there's nothing for us to be accountable for.

How we make money if we're free

The classroom toolkit is built and maintained as part of GoTimer, a broader timer site supported by occasional small donations and our own labour. We don't run ads on the toolkit pages. We don't sell teacher email addresses. We don't upsell to a "pro" tier with locked features. The classroom toolkit is a public-good contribution from the GoTimer maintainers, and the rest of the site helps cover hosting.

If you'd like to support us

The most useful thing teachers can do is link to this page from a school blog or share it with a colleague. Listicle and blog backlinks help this page rank for "classroom name picker no signup" searches and reach more teachers who'd benefit. If you write for a teaching publication, an honest mention in a "tools we use" round-up means a lot.

Looking for more no-signup classroom tools?

The same policy applies across the whole classroom toolkit: the group generator, noise meter, and tally counter all run without an account and without any data leaving your device. Bookmark the hub and you have all four under one URL.

Name Picker — No Signup Required FAQ

Is this name picker really no-signup?
Yes. You open the page, paste your names, and spin. There is no email gate, no "create a free account", no Google sign-in, no Twitter OAuth. Nothing about the spin requires an identity.
Why do other name pickers ask for an account?
Some name pickers want to sync class lists across devices (which requires storage on their server, which requires an account) or run ads tied to a teacher identity (more ad revenue per logged-in user). We deliberately don't do either — your list lives in your browser, not on our server, so there's nothing to sync and no identity to attach to ads.
Where is my class list stored?
In your browser's local storage on this device. Not on our server. Not synced to any cloud. Not visible to us or anyone else. The list reloads automatically when you re-visit the page on the same browser. If you clear cookies and site data, you'll need to re-paste.
Can I move my class list to a different computer?
Yes — copy the names out of the textarea and email them to yourself, or paste into a Google Doc and re-paste on the new machine. There is no "sync" button because we don't store the list on a server; the manual copy step is the privacy trade-off.
Is this safe under FERPA / COPPA / state student-data laws?
Because no student data leaves the device, no third-party data processing occurs and there's no PII transfer to evaluate. Most district privacy reviews approve this pattern on first pass. We are not lawyers; if your district requires a vendor data-processing addendum, our answer is "we don't process student data — there's nothing for us to sign about."
What about the Google Analytics on the page?
We use Google Analytics to count anonymous page views (so we know which tools are getting used). No student identifiers, no class list contents, no microphone audio is sent to GA. If your district disallows GA entirely, an extension like uBlock or Privacy Badger blocks it without affecting the tool.
Will this page ever require signup later?
No. The free classroom toolkit will stay free and signup-free. We may eventually offer optional paid features for power users (e.g., team-account class-list sync, exportable reports), but the core spin / pick / save-locally flow will remain accountless.
Is there a no-signup group generator too?
Yes — the same no-signup, no-upload, no-ad policy applies to the group generator, the noise meter, and the tally counter. The entire toolkit follows the same principles.
